
Deacons Hammer Charlotte 17-8 At Hooks Stadium

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest baseball team snapped a two-game skid on Tuesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium with an 17-8 victory over Charlotte. Senior Carlos Brackley led the Deacons going three-of-four with a home run, two doubles and a career-high six runs batted in.
The Demon Deacons scored in each of the game's first six innings highlighted by a seven-run fourth. Wake Forest sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, collected five hits and was aided by three Charlotte errors. It was the team's highest single-inning run total of the season. Wake Forest's 18 runs in the game was the highest offensive output since hanging 18 runs against Pace on March 13, 2000.
Nine Deacon batters had base hits including sophomore catcher Stephen Ghutzman who went three-for-four and drove in two runs. Senior Corey Slavik capped the Wake Forest scoring with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, his second home run of the year.
Junior left-hander Ryan Lewis improved to 2-0 on the season with the win in relief of starter Brad Comer. Lewis allowed one run in two innings. Lewis entered the game with a 4-2 lead and when he was replaced by sophomore Eric Maycroft, the Deacons owned a 14-3.
"Cory Sullivan jump started the offense in the first inning with a leadoff double. Ryan Lewis came in an did a great job when the game was close. Carlos Brackley had the big double that cleared the bases and Corey Slavik just topped it off for us," head coach George Greer said.
Several players saw their first action of the season including senior infielder Todd Achilles and three Wake Forest pitchers -- Maycroft, senior Adam Heaps and freshman Gregory Russell.
Wake Forest improves to 5-2 on the season while Charlotte slides to 2-6. The Demon Deacons are scheduled to play Liberty on Thursday in Lynchburg, Va. First pitch against the Flames is slated for 2:30 p.m.
