Men's Golf Finishes Seventh At Mercedes-Benz Championship

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - The 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring season in seventh place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, held at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
Listed in fourth place heading into Tuesday's final round, the Deacons shot a 10-over 298 on the final 18 to slip to seventh place among 15 teams in the final standings. Wake Forest concluded the 54-hole event with an eight-over 872, 25 strokes back of team champion Florida and just one stroke back of sixth place North Carolina.
Wake Forest sophomore Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) turned in the Deacons' top performance, posting a 17th-place finish, the third top-20 finish of his career. Yoder shot an even par 72 on Tuesday to finish even for the tournament with a 216 (70-74-72). His first round 70 tied his career low.
Another Deacon sophomore, Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.), tied for 22nd after carding a 77 on Tuesday. He finished the event with a one-over 217 (71-69-77). Sophomore Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) finished 41st with a four-over 220 (71-75-74). Junior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) placed 46th with a 223 (72-76-75), while sophomore Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) placed 50th with a score of 225 (76-72-77).
The Wake Forest golf team returns to action Feb. 25-27, when it competes in the Puerto Rico Shootout in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
