Palmer, P.R. - The 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team is currently in 14th place after two rounds of the Puerto Rico Classic, held at the par 72, 6,945-yard course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Palmer, P.R.
After starting the tournament tied for 12th with a 19-over 307 in the first round, the Deacons improved by four strokes in the second round, carding a 303, but slipped two spots in the standings to 14th. Georgia and Georgia Tech lead the 15-team field with a three-over 579 after two rounds. Clemson, the first-round leader, is one stroke back of the first-place teams.
Wake Forest junior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) turned in the Deacons' top performance of the tournament thus far, carding a one-over 73 in Monday's round. He is currently tied for 40th place with a seven-over 151. Three Deacons are tied for 51st position with a 10-over 154, including freshman Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.), who turned in rounds of 78-76, sophomore Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) who posted a team-low 74 on Sunday and carded an 80 in the second round, and another sophomore, Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.), who has turned in rounds of 79-75 thus far. Sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) is tied for 59th with a 12-over 156 (77-79).
The final 18 holes of the Puerto Rico Classic takes place on Tuesday.
