WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Junior guard Ervin Murray, who was plagued with tendinitis in his right knee for the last one-third of the season, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on that knee earlier today.
The ACC leader in assist-to-turnover ratio, Murray's playing time began to dwindle in late February as the pain in his knee increased. He played only briefly in February games against Maryland and Clemson before sitting out the entire Feb. 24 game versus Duke.
"The first of our off-season concerns is the medical condition of our team," 12th-year Deacon coach Dave Odom said. "Four of our nine returning players have medical concerns that are being evaluated or are presently being repaired. All could result in minor surgery."
Junior Craig Dawson is scheduled for surgery (in 2-3 weeks) on his left shoulder, which was dislocated in Wake's ACC Tournament loss to Maryland. Dawson was not able to play in the Deacs' season-ending loss to Butler last week in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Josh Howard has an injured right shoulder and right wrist -- nagging injuries that plagued Howard for much of the season -- that are currently being evaluated by the medical staff. Freshman A.W. Hamilton has an injured ankle that is also being looked at closely.
"At this point we expect all of these medical situations to be corrected quickly," Odom said. "These injuries should not pose problems for any of these players next season."
