Orlando, Fla. - Second-ranked Georgia Tech held off Clemson and Wake Forest in the final round to win its seventh team championship at the 48th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf championship at Disney's Magnolia Course. Clemson senior John Engler went wire-to-wire to win the fifth individual title for the Tigers.
Georgia Tech, which began Sunday's round one shot behind Wake Forest, shot an eight-under par 280 to win going away by an eight shot margin over defending-champion Clemson. Wake Forest, which went two-over par for the third round, finished in third place, nine shots off the winning pace.
"It was quite a tough championship because Wake Forest and Clemson, who played in the same group with us, were tough throughout," said Bruce Heppler. "We had to play our best to pull it off. It was a lot tougher than the eight-shot victory margin would indicate."
Virginia finished in fourth place at 859, five-under par. NC State was fifth, North Carolina sixth, Duke seventh, Florida State eighth and Maryland ninth.
Engler, who had not finished lower than tied for fifth in his previous three ACC championship tournaments, started fast with an opening day 66, added a two-under par 70 on the second day and closed with a 67 in the third round to finish with a record 54-hole total 203. The previous best 54-hole score was a 204 posted by Wake Forest's Gary Hallberg in 1980.
Wake Forest has concluded its regular season and will await the NCAA selection pairings for upcoming regionals, which will be announced later this week.
