Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - Wake Forest golfer Marta Prieto (Sevilla, Spain) shot a three-over 76 in the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Wednesday, dropping to a tie for 34th place in the standings. Prieto, who is competing as an individual, has reached the halfway point of the tournament with a four-over 150 on the par-72, 6,106-yard El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort.
The Deacon senior is 12 strokes back of field leader Laura Moffat of UCLA, who owns a pair of three-under 69s for the first two rounds. Prieto also ranks third among the six individual players competing in the event.
"Marta played well on the front nine today," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "But I think she got tired mentally and the heat got to her as well. This is a course she can play well, it's definitely a scorable course for her. So she's looking forward to teeing off in the morning and doing well tomorrow."
Prieto is looking to improve upon her third-place individual finish in the 2000 Championships, which is the best finish ever by a Deacon women's golfer.
Duke and Oklahoma State are currently tied for first place and lead the 24-team field with a 16-over 592. The third round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships takes place on Thursday. Prieto will tee off at 8:20 a.m.
