WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Noel Ruebel, head coach of the Wake Forest University track and field team the past two years, has resigned from that position, athletic director Ron Wellman confirmed today.
Ruebel has been a part of the Deacon track and field program since 1996, working as an assistant coach for three years before taking over the head coaching position in the fall of 1999. This past spring Ruebel's Deacons captured four first-place finishes at the ACC Track and Field Championships (two during the indoor season and two during the outdoor season). During his two-year stint as head coach, 18 different Deacons earned All-ACC honors.
"I've enjoyed the opportunity to work with so many fine young men and help shape their lives," Ruebel said. "I realized the goal of coaching an Olympian in Chris Huffins and I believe the men's track and field program has experienced excellent progress the past few years. For these things I am grateful to the Wake Forest community and those who contributed to our success."
Ruebel came to Winston-Salem in 1996 after serving one season as an assistant coach at Ohio State and 13 years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Purdue. From 1975-78, Ruebel was a two-time All-American high jumper at Purdue and in 1978 was named the school's top male scholar-athlete.
"We are very appreciative of Noel Ruebel's efforts at Wake Forest," Wellman said. "The men's track and field program is in better shape today than prior to Noel's arrival and that is a direct reflection upon him."
A search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
