High Point, N.C. - Wake Forest's Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.), a rising junior on the Demon Deacon golf team, captured the 2001 North Carolina Amateur title over the weekend at the Willow Creek Golf Course. Wilfong shared or held the lead each day of the championship while shooting an eight-under 280 (69-70-71-70). He defeated Winston-Salem resident Chris Logan by two strokes for the crown.
Wilfong became the seventh Wake Forest golfer to claim the title and the youngest since PGA Tour star Scott Hoch won in 1976. Wilfong competed in nine events this season for the Deacons, compiling a 74.7 stroke average and posting five top-25 individual finishes. He is a former North Carolina high school state champion, having won the 2-A title as a junior at East Davidson High School in 1998.
