Prieto Captures Ladies British Amateur Title

FIFE, SCOTLAND -- Marta Prieto, a 2001 Wake Forest graduate, won the Ladies British Amateur Championship on June 16 at the Ladybank Golf Club in Fife, Scotland. The tournament was conducted in a match play format. Prieto defeated Emma Duggleby in Saturday's final 4 and 3.
Prieto, a second team All-American for the Demon Deacons in 2001, advanced past six opponents during the three-day event.
Prieto was Wake Forest's top golfer during the 2000-01 season, leading the Deacons with a 74.7 stroke average. She recorded five top 10 finishes during the season and earned an individual bid to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 35th. Her best finish of the season came at the NCAA Fall Preview, where she finished tied for first with teammate Maria Beautell. Prieto also posted top-10 finishes at the SEC/ACC Challenge (9th), the Bryan National Collegiate (4th), the ACC Championships (3rd) and the NCAA East Regional (7th).
Prieto, who was also a three-time All-ACC selection during her career, was one of just three ACC players to earn 2001 All-America honors. She graduated in May with a degree in economics.
