CLEMSON, S.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team upset Clemson in five games 3-2 in its ACC opener. The Demon Deacons improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.
Wake Forest defeated Clemson 28-30, 30-23, 30-22, 25-30 and 15-12. The Deacons lost the first game by only two points but bounced back to win the following two games before the Tigers fought back to win the fourth. In the final game Wake prevailed 15-12 according to the new rules for NCAA volleyball state that in game five a team must reach only 15 points while winning by two.
Wake was led by senior Trina Maso de Moya, who tallied 23 kills, 23 digs, seven service aces and three blocks. Also in double figures was sophomore Ashley Fisher, who posted 13 kills and 21 digs. Junior setter Ashlee Phillips led the Deacon offense with a season high 67 assists. Senior Margaret Davidson recorded 18 kills and five blocks for Wake Forest.
Clemson key players in double figures were Jodi Steffes posting 24 kills and 16 digs and Meredith Kirtland with 14 kills and 11 digs. Setter Jessie Betcher led the Tiger offense with 60 assists.
Head coach Valorie Baker was excited about her team's defeat over Clemson. "It was a total group effort tonight. Everybody played well on defense," Baker said. "Those second effort balls that we were able to put away for points were key in our victory. Trina, Margaret and Ashley (Fisher) stepped up and played great offensively and defensively," said Baker.
"Trina's aggressive serving in tight situations made all the difference. Her serving success gave the whole team confidence to win. They played great together to get our first ACC win of the season."
The Deacons travel next to Atlanta, Ga. to face Georgia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.
