Women's Tennis Opens Season at William & Mary Invitational

Williamsburg, Va. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team opened its 2001-02 campaign on Friday, competing in opening round matches at the William & Mary Invitational. Six members of the team are participating in singles, while three doubles teams, including the nation's second-ranked duo of Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) are also competing for Wake Forest.
In singles, Bergman and Elizabeth Proctor (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) both posted first-round victories in straight sets. Listed as the top seed in the "William" (A) singles bracket, Bergman made quick work of Ashley Backus of Boston College, 6-0, 6-1. Proctor won 7-5, 6-4 over Ines Khelifi of Virginia Tech in the "Mary" (B) bracket. Both will compete in quarterfinal matches on Saturday morning.
Freshmen Katie Martzolf (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Cathy Sutej (Lewisville, N.C.), competing in "Green" (C) and "Gold" (D) singles respectively, both had first-round byes and will see action in quarterfinal matches on Saturday morning as well.
Junior Maren Haus (Brielle, N.J.) and sophomore Aimee Smith (Norcross, Ga.) both lost their first-round matches on Friday, but will continue competing in consolation brackets on Saturday.
The tandem of Bergman/Bielik, the top seed in "A" doubles, had an easy time in the first two rounds, winning both matches by an 8-1 score. They will face a duo from Maryland in Saturday's semifinals.
Haus and Smith also teamed up in the same doubles bracket. After blanking their opponents from Virginia Tech, 8-0, in the first round, the Deacon duo lost to Marshall, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
Martzolf and Sutej competed as a team in Flight B doubles, winning their first match 9-8(7) over a pair from Virginia Tech. They then advanced to Saturday's semifinals with an 8-4 victory over a Boston College duo.
Action in the William & Mary Invitational continues tomorrow. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
