Wake Forest Field Hockey Loses To Maryland, 4-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored the second-half game-winner and freshman Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) tallied a pair of insurance goals as No. 3 Maryland (7-1, 1-0 ACC) overcame seventh-ranked Wake Forest (3-3, 0-1 ACC) in the first Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey match of the 2001 season. The Terps outshot the Demon Deacons by a 15-2 margin in the second stanza to overcome their second-consecutive top 10 opponent and an inauspicious start.
"We started to do some simple things better in the second half," commented 14th-year Terp head coach Missy Meharg. "When you are a good team, people expect a lot of complex 1-on-1 dribbling. But we started the second half concentrating on things like simple passing."
The Demon Deacons were first on the scoreboard when sophomore Lucy Shaw slapped in a direct penalty corner shot from Heather Aughinbaugh and Lynne Shenk. The Deacons kept the lead for nearly ten minutes before a Terrapin answer, which came from junior forward Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.). Messimer punched in a long endline cross from senior Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) at 10:21 to tie the contest before the end of the first half.
The Terrapins roared to life in the second period, using tremendous ball movement to create several scoring opportunities. Two-time All-American Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) set up Kelly's game-winner with a cross from the right side of the cage with 26:53 remaining. Barbieri struck twice before the period was over: once on a rebound at 7:56 and once on a long slapper on a fast break from Messimer at 6:17. The match marks the third multi-goal game for the Terp rookie, who leads the squad with eight goals and 18 points.
Maryland senior goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) made one save in 66:38, and rookie keeper Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) stopped one Deacon shot while finishing out the contest. Deacon keeper Katie Ridd made 11 saves in a solid effort.
The Terps, now 2-0 at home, will host the Princeton Tigers on Friday Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. and the Virginia Cavilers on Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m. The Deacons welcome Kent State to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Sunday at 2 p.m.
