LARAMIE, WY - Wake Forest volleyball ended the day with a win against Oklahoma, after a disappointing loss to Idaho State earlier in the Wyoming Invitational. Senior Margaret Davidson led the Deacon attack against the Sooners, setting a new record, .850 attack percentage. The Demon Deacons are now 4-1 for the season.
Wake Forest lost in three games to Idaho State 23-30, 30-32 and 23-30. Despite senior Trina Maso de Moya posting 13 kills and seven digs and senior defensive specialist Amber Rieg stepping up to contribute eight digs, the Deacons couldn't pull through.
Head coach Valorie Baker was disappointed with the Deacon loss to the Bengals. "Idaho State played the game of their life and we didn't step up to the plate," said Baker. "Defensive specialist Amber Rieg came in and played an incredible game defensively for us. Our middles had a good offensive game. Idaho State played a wonderful game and we didn't answer the call."
Wake Forest bounced back to defeat Oklahoma in its second match of the day, 30-26, 30-19 and 30-13. The team progressively got better throughout the match as indicated in the decrease of Oklahoma's score.
Davidson set a new individual single season and individual career record, recording a .850 attack percentage from 17 kills of 20 attempts. Both the previous records were held by Amanda Tiller in 1999, who posted a .424 attack percentage. Other Deacons contributors include Ashlee Phillips with 37 assists and Maso de Moya with nine kills and seven digs.
Baker was pleased with her team's improvement. "Our team came out much more mentally prepared. It was a jolt of reality to lose the first match and our players realized they needed to focus on every point of every game," said Baker. "The girls' aggressiveness continued throughout the match, regardless of the score. Against Oklahoma they played confident and relaxed which was crucial for the win."
"Ashlee Phillips distributed the ball well to other players. Trina Maso de Moya stepped up which made a difference on the left side and Margaret Davidson hit .850 to turn us around."
Wake Forest takes on UT-Arlington tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. and Wyoming at 9:30 p.m. in the second day of action in the Wyoming Invitational.
