Deacons Begin New Year By Hosting Richmond Wednesday
Wake Forest kicks off the New Year Wednesday night by hosting Richmond, an old non-conference rival, at Lawrence Joel Coliseum (no TV/7:00 p.m.). The 23rd-ranked Deacons, 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, are coming off a 64-59 win over 19th-ranked Marquette Saturday afternoon. Wake Forest led by as many as 19 points (52-33) in the second half before the Golden Eagles battled back to knot the score at 57-57. Two Darius Songaila free throws and an Antwan Scott dunk helped seal Wake's seventh straight homecourt victory. Richmond, 6-6, beat Cornell 52-41 Saturday in the consolation game of the Spider Invitational. Mike Skrocki's 21 points led the Spiders, who have faced a difficult non-conference schedule. Wednesday's game will be the 35th meeting between the two teams. Wake Forest leads the all-time series, 27-7, including a 69-61 win at Richmond last season. What's at stake for Wake Wednesday: - Wake Forest will try to extend its homecourt winning streak to eight games. The Deacons are 7-0 at home this season. - Wake Forest has won 22 consecutive non-conference home games. Wake's last loss at home to a non-ACC foe came against 19th-ranked Arkansas on Dec. 23, 1998. - The Deacons are searching for consistency and momentum before jumping into the heart of the ACC schedule. Wake plays at North Carolina Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
A Quick Look At The Deacons
Wake Forest, a veteran team with four seniors in the starting lineup, has shown the ability to win the close games. The Deacons are 5-0 this season in games decided by five points or less. The Deacons prefer an up-tempo style, although two consecutive low-scoring games have lowered their scoring average to under 80 points per game. Wake Forest has done a solid job on the boards, out-rebounding opponents by 4.3 rebounds per game. The Deacs need to take better care of the basketball as they have the same number of turnovers (194) as assists. Senior Darius Songaila (17.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game) is having an all-conference type season. He has scored in double figures in every game and he shoots 54.3 percent from the field and 82.1 percent from the free throw line. Junior Josh Howard (12.9 ppg. and 7.8 rpg.) leads the team in rebounding and steals. He is coming off a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) against 19th-ranked Marquette. Senior Antwan Scott (11.9 ppg., 5.2 rpg.) leads the ACC in blocked shots and he is shooting nearly 60 percent (.598) from the field. Senior Craig Dawson (11.3 ppg.) is one of the ACC's most prolific and accurate three-point shooters (33 three-point field goals/.407). Senior Broderick Hicks (8.7 ppg.) leads the team in assists (44) and he snapped a three-game scoring slump with a team-high 14 points against Marquette Saturday. Freshman Vytas Danelius (6.0 ppg., 3.6 rpg.) has provided instant offense off the bench. Senior Ervin Murray, junior Steve Lepore and freshmen Taron Downey and Jamaal Levy are all part of the rotation.
Wake Forest Hangs On To Beat 19th-Ranked Marquette Saturday
Wake Forest played perhaps its best half of the season in the first half of Saturday's 64-59 win over 19th-ranked Marquette, then held on in the second half for the victory against the Golden Eagles. The Deacons led 39-26 at intermission and led by as much as 19 points (52-33) in the second half. Marquette, however, rallied to tie the score at 57-57 before Darius Songaila hit two free throws and Antwan Scott converted a dunk to seal the Wake victory. Five Deacons scored in double figures paced by Broderick Hicks' 14 points. Josh Howard recorded his second straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Wake Forest won despite shooting just 38.9 percent and getting out-rebounded 38-36. More from Saturday's win over Marquette: - Marquette's 59 points were the fewest by a Deacon opponent this season. - The Deacons received just seven points from the bench.
Deacon Streaks
- The Deacons have a seven-game homecourt winning streak with a perfect 7-0 record this season. Wake has wins over UNC-Wilmington, Elon, Minnesota, SC State, Florida State, St. Francis (PA) and Marquette. The Deacs' final two home games last season were losses to Final Four-bound Duke and Maryland. - Wake Forest has won 22 consecutive non-conference home games. Wake's last non-conference loss at home came against 19th-ranked Arkansas on Dec. 23, 1998. - Wake Forest has lost its last two road games -- at Kansas and at St. John's. - Wake Forest has made at least one three-point field goal in 267 consecutive games. - The Deacons are 5-0 this season in games decided by five points or less. - Wake Forest is 5-0 when scoring 80 points or more. - Wake has used the same starting lineup -- Broderick Hicks, Craig Dawson, Antwan Scott, Darius Songaila and Josh Howard -- in all 12 games. - Songaila has scored in double figures in 13 straight games dating back to last season. - Dawson has made at least one three-point field goal in every game this season. Throw out the game against Maryland in last year's ACC Tournament when Dawson played just one minute before getting injured, he has made at least one three-pointer in 22 straight games.

Wake's Schedule One Of Its Most Difficult Slates Ever
In November and December, Wake Forest played four nationally-ranked teams. The last time the Deacons played four ranked opponents before Jan. 1 came in the 1953-54 season. And the most difficult portion of the Wake schedule is on the horizon. Consider: - According to the latest RPI ratings (CollegeRPI.com), six Wake Forest opponents are ranked in the top 14. - Using the AP poll, Wake Forest will play three consecutive games against No. 4 Virginia (Jan. 15), No. 1 Duke (Jan. 19) and No. 8 Maryland (Jan. 23). Songaila Gaining Reputation As Clutch Performer
Senior Darius Songaila is the type of player who wants the ball in his hands at crunch time. And almost each time, the results have been great for Wake Forest: - Songaila hit a lay-up with 2.7 seconds remaining to lift Wake Forest to a 79-78 win over UNC-Wilmington in the season opener. - Nov. 21 against Fresno State, Songaila's follow tip with 1.7 seconds left gave the Deacons a 62-61 win over the Bulldogs in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden. - Songaila's two free throws with 3:37 remaining broke a 57-57 tie with 19th-ranked Marquette on Dec. 29. The Deacons led the rest of the way en route to a 64-59 win over the Golden Eagles.
Darius Songaila Enjoying An All-ACC-Type Season So Far Perhaps senior Darius Songaila is motivated because he was left off the preseason All-ACC team, or maybe he's flourishing in coach Skip Prosser's system. Regardless, Songaila is enjoying his finest season as a Deacon. Over his last five games, Songaila has averaged 19.8 points, 3.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game while shooting 58.5 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. More on Songaila: - He leads the team and ranks third in the ACC in scoring (17.7 points per game). - His scoring average is the highest by a Wake Forest player since Tim Duncan averaged 20.8 points as a senior in 1997. - Songaila is the only Deacon to score in double figures in every game this season. Freshman Trio Making Immediate Impact For The Deacons
Wake Forest's three freshmen -- forwards Vytas Danelius and Jamaal Levy and guard Taron Downey -- are becoming more and more a part of the regular rotation. Danelius leads all non-starters in scoring (6.0 ppg.) while averaging more than 14 minutes of action per game. He is shooting a lofty 64.4 percent from the field. Levy showed a glimpse of his potential Dec. 16 against Florida State when he scored a career-high 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made two three-point field goals. Levy is becoming more a part of the regular rotation after missing a week of practice earlier in the season when he returned home to Panama for a family emergency. Downey was 2-of-2 from three-point range Dec. 7 against SC State, but his biggest asset this season has been running the point guard position in a dependable fashion. He has played in every game, averaging seven minutes of action.
Scott One Of The ACC's Most Improved Players
Senior Antwan Scott, in his first year as a starter, is making the most of his senior season. He has nearly doubled his statistics from a year ago, easily making him one of the ACC's most improved players. Consider: - He leads the ACC in blocked shots (2.08). - Scott leads the team in minutes played (30.3). - He ranks among the ACC leaders in field goal percentage (.598). - He ranks 18th in the ACC in scoring (11.9 ppg.) and 18th in rebounding (5.2 rpg.). - Scott now ranks fifth on Wake Forest's all-time blocked shots list after recently passing Rod Griffin (113 blocks from 1975-78). Wake Forest has been ranked in both polls for six consecutive weeks and the Deacons have been in the AP poll in 25 of the last 26 weeks. Using the AP poll as an indicator, Wake is facing one of the nation's most difficult schedules this season. Six of the nation's top 16 teams -- No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Kansas, No. 4 Virginia, No. 8 Maryland, No. 13 Cincinnati and No. 16 Syracuse -- are on the Wake Forest schedule. More on Wake Forest and the national polls: - Wake Forest is 2-2 against ranked foes this year. The Deacons beat No. 25 Marquette and No. 23 Fresno State and lost to No. 18 Syracuse and No. 4 Kansas. - Wake has already won as many games over nationally-ranked teams this season (two) than in all of last season (2-8). - The Deacons' win over No. 23 Fresno State Nov. 21 snapped an eight-game losing streak against nationally-ranked teams. Wake Forest went 2-8 against ranked teams last season. - Wake Forest is ranked 13th by CollegeRPI.com, 23rd by The Sporting News and 24th in the Sagarin computer rankings. - If the rankings hold up, Wake would play consecutive games against No. 4 Virginia (Jan. 15), No. 1 Duke (Jan. 19) and No. 8 Maryland (Jan. 23). Prosser, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Maryland's Gary Williams are the only current Atlantic Coast Conference coaches to own more than one victory against a No. 1-ranked team.
Senior Class' Accomplishments Continue To Grow
With five fourth-year seniors on its roster, including four seniors in the starting lineup, Wake Forest has one of the ACC's most experienced groups. Four of Wake's top five scorers -- Darius Songaila (17.7 ppg.), Antwan Scott (11.9 ppg.), Craig Dawson (11.3 ppg.) and Broderick Hicks (8.7 ppg.) -- are all seniors. Seniors lead Wake in every statistical category except for steals, which junior Josh Howard leads. Those five seniors -- Songaila, Dawson, Hicks, Ervin Murray and Scott -- have enjoyed much success over the last four years. Consider: - Wake's senior class has appeared in postseason play every season, including an NCAA Tournament appearance last season. - Over the last four seasons, Wake Forest is a combined 67-42 (.615). - The seniors have been a part of three wins over teams ranked in the top 10. - In 2001, Wake Forest won the postseason NIT championship. - The five seniors have combined to play in 534 career games.

A.W. Hamilton Announces Plans To Transfer From Wake Forest
A.W. Hamilton, a reserve guard on the Wake Forest basketball team, will transfer to another school Deacon head coach Skip Prosser announced last Friday. Hamilton, a 6-3 sophomore, has not indicated where he will transfer to, although he has expressed his intention to attend a school closer to his hometown of Georgetown, KY. "I am sorry to see A.W. leave Wake Forest," Prosser said. "He is a hard-working young man and he is the consumate team player. However, I do respect his decision to transfer to a school closer to home. We wish A.W. nothing but the best." Hamilton saw action in four of Wake Forest's 11 games this season, averaging 3.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He scored a career-high nine points Dec. 7 against South Carolina State. Last season he played in 19 of Wake's 30 games, averaging 1.7 points and 0.4 rebounds per game.
It's Probably Just A Coincidence
Wake Forest earned NCAA Tournament bids in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2001. In each of those seasons, the Deacons won their first game of the New Year.
