WAKE FOREST VS. MARYLAND January 23, 2002 Winston-Salem, NC (Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum) Post Game Quotes
FINAL SCORE - MARYLAND 85 WAKE FOREST 63
Maryland Coach Gary Williams
"That's as solid as we've played at both ends of the floor all year. We're a very patient offense, and, if you're patient, you score points - and we got 85 against a good team. Our bench has gotten better, it's great to see how well they played tonight, knowing that we lost three key bench players (to graduation). This was a good team win - and a lot of guys contributed in a big win, which is what makes us a good team."
On Juan Dixon...
"When Juan gets the ball moving, he has the ability to do some things - but what gets overlooked is what he does for us on defense. He also provides leadership on the floor, and that's what you like to see out of your seniors."
Wake Forest Coach Skip Prosser
"I have to give credit to Maryland - they are a great basketball team. The only good thing was that we had a great crowd, but we gave them next to nothing to be excited about. We don't seem to have a great deal of confidence. We were tight, scared and afraid to make a pass. I felt like we prepared the team well going into the game and thought after last year, we would have some fire to play with.. We aren't showing enough fight to stop anybody. I'm very disappointed. We have to find and make our own turnaround."
Wake Forest Senior Forward Darius Songaila
On the 17 turnovers... "Their point guards often cut through the lane and slap the ball away and we threw passes into their hands. We need to care for the ball better."
On matching up against Maryland's size... "It's a tough matchup, they're rotating a lot of guys in, so they are fresh all the time and we have to go out and match their intensity. Every one of their players is a good player and we need to be able to go out and play them like they are the best in the league. We have the people to guard anyone in the league, we just need to get down to it."
On three straight losses... "We're going to find out a lot about ourselves against Georgia Tech. The next game will reflect how we react to the losses and we need to start tomorrow in practice."
