College Park, Md. - In a tale of two halves, Maryland used a 27-point swing from the halftime score to tackle Wake Forest 57-46 in ACC women's basketball action on Thursday night on Allfirst Court at Cole Field House. The Terrapins raise their record to 10-9 (3-5 ACC), while Wake Forest falls to 9-10 (3-6 ACC).
The first half was all Wake Forest, with the Demon Deacons shooting 63.6 percent (14-22) from the floor en route to a 34-18 halftime lead. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Maryland shot only 16 percent (4-25) in the first half, while turning the ball over 12 times. Wake Forest sharper-shooter Tonia Brown (Roanoke, Va.) finished the opening stanza with eight points to lead the Demon Deacons. March?Strickland (Kingston, Mass.) managed eight points in the worst half of shooting the Terrapins weathered this year.
In the second half, a role reversal saw Maryland climb back into the game from a 16-point deficit on the backs of seniors Strickland and Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.). Strickland hit the three-pointer with 9:59 remaining to play complete the turnaround and put Maryland up two points after a 25-7 run. From there on it was all Terps. Warley ended the game with her second double-double this season after grabbing 15 of her career-high 17 rebounds and scoring all of 12 her points in the second half. When the buzzer sounded, Maryland had come all the way back to capture the 57-46 win, holding Wake Forest to just 12 points in the second half on 4-34 (11.8 percent) shooting from the field.
Wake Forest's Tonia Brown ended the game with 11 points with Erin Ferrell (Gaithersburg, Md.) coming off the bench for eight points in a homecoming game of sorts in her backyard. Strickland led all scorers with 18 points, including 5-11 from beyond the arc.
Wake Forest takes the road for it's second of three away contests, meeting NC State next Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. after a seven-day lay-off.
