David Winberg Named Assistant Women's Tennis Coach

Winston-Salem, N.C. - David Winberg has joined the Wake Forest women??s tennis program as an assistant coach, as announced by head coach Brian Fleishman.
??David is going to be a great addition to the staff,?? said Fleishman. ??He brings extensive playing experience to the position and will be a very good on-court coach because of his background.??
Winberg comes to Wake Forest from the University of Central Florida, where he served as an assistant with the Golden Knights men??s program. While he was with the team, UCF received a national ranking of No. 58, finished second in the 2001 Atlantic Sun Conference championships and earned ITA All-Academic Team honors.
Winberg played for the Golden Knights from 1998-99, and was a two-time all-conference selection in addition to being named the 1999 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year. He graduated from UCF in 2001 with a bachelor??s degree in Journalism. While in Orlando he was also an intern in the school??s sports information office, serving as the contact for men??s soccer and both men??s and women??s tennis programs.
A native of Jonkoping, Sweden, Winberg spent 1995-97 as an assistant coach for Vaxjo Tennissallskap in Vaxjo, Sweden. He was involved in instruction and coaching for junior players and assisted with various administrative duties.
Winberg began his collegiate career at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he played from 1994-95 under current WFU men??s tennis coach Jeff Zinn. While at UALR, Winberg was ranked in both singles and doubles, earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors and named the Region VI Rookie of the Year.
Winberg also enjoyed an outstanding junior career in his native country, earning a No. 3 ranking in Sweden in the 18-and-under singles division. He won the 1991 and ??92 Bastadtennis tournaments and captured the doubles title in the 1991 Swedish Championships.
??David has a good coaching personality, and has already developed a good rapport with the players,?? Fleishman said. ??He also adds an international flair to the team.??
The Wake Forest women??s tennis team finished last season ranked 15th and advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships. The squad boasts four ranked singles players entering the 2002 campaign, including the nation??s No. 1 player, Bea Bielik. The spring season begins Feb. 2 with a home dual match against Tennessee.
