WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team jumped out to an early lead on Florida State Sunday evening, winning the first game 34-32, but dropped the next three, 30-18, 30-25, 30-26, to lose the match 3-1 at Reynolds Gym Sunday evening. After rallying from an eight-point deficit to win the first game, it was hard to count out the Demon Deacons, but the Seminoles came out on fire in game two, hitting .522 as a team, never trailing and ended up winning by 12. Florida State never looked back and never trailed by more than one point the remainder of the match.
Junior middle blocker Jessica Hauff came off the bench to lead Wake Forest with a career high 20 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Kim Stern hit .484 with 18 kills to go along with five blocks. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips dished out 54 assists and had six kills, seven digs, a service ace and two blocks. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg left game three with the help of athletic trainer Jeff Strahm, but returned in game four as the libero, where she continued to lead the team defensively, coming up with nine digs on day.
Kristin Frye led Florida State with 16 kills to go with 12 digs. Dawn Hough hit .609 with 14 kills and Aisha Carr had a .520 attack percentage with 15 kills. Hough and Carr each had five blocks as well. Jennifer Anderson handed out 62 assists and Cerina Pele registered 17 digs.
Florida State improves to 14-7 overall and 5-3 in the ACC with the win and Wake Forest falls to 10-12 overall and 4-5 in the ACC with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action next week with a road trip to Johnson City, Tenn., to take on East Tennessee State at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22 before returning home on Friday, Oct. 25 to face Duke at 7:00 p.m. in a match originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26.
