Volleyball Tripped Up By Duke, 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team lost 3-1 to Duke Friday night at Reynolds Gym. Falling behind 30-20, 30-19, the Demon Deacons rallied to take game three 30-25, but were unable to hold off the Blue Devils in game four, dropping 30-21. Duke, which nearly hit .300 as a team with 74 kills, held Wake Forest to a .129 attack percentage and only 45 kills.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg led Wake Forest with 13 kills to go with eight digs. Junior outside hitter Sara Beth DeLisle paced the Demon Deacon defense with 12 digs to go with five kills, two blocks and a service ace. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips contributed 36 assists, nine digs three blocks, one ace and five kills.
The Demon Deacons received a lift from senior outside hitter Amanda Tiller who seemed to help focus Wake's attack in game three, adding three kills herself. Freshman middle blocker Christy Williams saw some action at outside hitter in the second game, as Wake Forest deployed three middle blockers; Williams, Kim Stern and Jessica Hauff, all at once for a stretch. Williams recorded four blocks on the night, including three solo stuffs to go with six kills and no errors.
Sarah Salem led Duke with 24 kills and only five attack errors, hitting .396 on the night. She was one of four Blue Devils with an attacking percentage of .300 or better. Arielle Linderman had an attacking percentage of .429 with nine kills to compliment her two digs, four blocks and a team-leading 29 assists.
Duke improves to 19-6 overall and 7-3 in the ACC with the win and Wake Forest drops to 11-13 overall and 4-6 in the ACC with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they travel to College Park, Md., to take on Maryland at 6:00 p.m.
