Volleyball Fights Off Virginia, 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team defeated Virginia 3-1 Friday night at Reynolds Gym. The Demon Deacons (7-8, 2-1 ACC) split the first two games with the Cavaliers (6-13, 0-4) by scores of 30-22, 24-30, but then fought through a night of poor serving to win the next two games 30-16, 30-25 to take the match.
Sophomore middle blocker Kim Stern led Wake Forest with 13 kills to go with six blocks. Junior middle blocker Jessica Hauff posted a career-high seven blocks on the night, including four solo stuffs. Junior outside hitter Ashley Fisher contributed 11 kills and 10 digs, while redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg aced four serves, put away nine kills and led the team with 19 digs. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips started the match and registered 21 assists and eight digs. After the break, freshman setter Erin Borhart took over, starting games three and four, handing out 17 assists, six kills, nine digs and one block assist.
"Erin Borhart came in and did an incredible job," said Wake Forest head coach Valorie Baker. "A freshman setter coming into a split match, she showed the kind of confidence needed to have our team respond well, which they did."
Alexis Geocaris led Virginia with 16 kills. Kristin Chaney had 13 digs to go with 36 assists.
Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow when the Deacons host Maryland at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Reynolds Gym.
