Women's Tennis Has Three Advance At Deacon Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Deacon Classic got underway Friday at Leighton Tennis Stadium and the Wake Forest women's tennis team saw three individuals advance in singles play and a doubles team pick up a win as well.

Katie Martzolf breezed by William & Mary's Megan Muth 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of singles Flight A, after receiving a first-round bye. She will face Anna Maria Forgacs from Georgia State in the semifinals tomorrow. Martzolf and doubles partner, Danielle Schwartz, got a first round bye today and will take on a Virginia Tech pair tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Karin Coetzee ransacked Lyndsey Free from Appalachian State 6-0 in the first set and then Free called it quits, giving Coetzee a quick first round win in the singles Flight A. Coetzee then stopped Lori Stern from Virginia, 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the quarterfinals. She will play #92 Jen Tuchband from the Cavaliers tomorrow in the semifinals. Coetzee and doubles partner, Aimee Smith, defeated a pair from Georgia State 8-4 in the first round. They will take on two from Virginia tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Elizabeth Proctor rolled over Jenny Andrade from Winthrop 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of singles Flight B and then came back from behind to beat Martz Bechliwanis from Virginia 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. She will face Lauren Bruch of the Cavaliers tomorrow in the semifinals.

Smith won her first round match over Appalachian State's Elena Berger 6-2, 6-0, but then fell 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to Nina Kamp from William & Mary. She will play Dora Bechliwanis from Virginia tomorrow in consolation play.

Schwartz stumbled in her first round singles match, losing 7-5, 7-6 (3) to Zdenka Videnova from Virginia Tech. She bounced back though and creamed Maja Russinova from Tennessee Tech 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation quarterfinals. She will play Charlotte's Marilyn Clark in the consolation semifinals tomorrow.

The Deacon Classic continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday. Results are available to download as a PDF file.
