WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Liberty awakened a sleeping giant Tuesday night in Reynolds Gym when it took a 2-0 lead over the Wake Forest volleyball team by scores of 30-23 and 30-25. The Demon Deacons returned from the locker room and rallied to win games three and four by scores of 30-20 and 30-28, forcing a fifth and final game. Jumping out to a 6-0 lead, Wake Forest (8-9) shut down the Flames (8-12) 15-4 to claim the match.
Freshman middle blocker Christy Williams led the Deacs with 19 kills and 12 blocks, including a single-match school record 10 block assists. Her 19 kills were the most by a Demon Deacon this year. Senior setter Ashlee Phillips hit a blistering .778 with eight kills on nine tries to go with seven blocks, seven digs and 48 assists. Junior outside hitter Ashley Fisher was poignant as well, putting away 12 kills on 18 attempts for a red-hot .667 attack percentage in addition to 10 digs and five blocks.
"Christy Williams did a great job today," said Wake Forest head coach Valorie Baker. "Her playing intensity and her ability to maintain a high level of play the whole match was outstanding and Ashlee Phillips did a great job of getting the ball to her too. Ashley Fisher really mixed her shots up well tonight. She really did a nice job of recognizing the line shot when it was open and capitalizing on their weak blocker."
Erin McKeown led the Flames' with 16 kills and 12 digs. Janell Migeot added 15 kills, nine digs and two blocks while Tiffany Thoreson contributed 14 kills. Setter Kristin colson racked up 54 assists on the night.
Wake Forest returns to action this weekend when the Demon Deacons travel to the Triangle to take on No. 11 North Carolina at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 and NC State at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Raleigh.
