Winston-Salem, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team outshot Davidson by a 40-0 margin in a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats tonight at Kentner Stadium. In getting their ninth consecutive win, the Demon Deacons improve to 10-2 (3-0 ACC), while the Wildcats drop to 5-7 (2-1 NorPac). Wake Forest has now won 19 straight games at Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest got on the board in the early going when senior Maria Whitehead scored off a feed from freshman Maeke Boreel. The Davidson defense was strong, with the help of several big saves from goalkeeper Sarah Nolan, but Wake took a 2-0 with 10 minutes left in the first when sophomore Kelly Dostal scored off a penalty corner from senior Lynne Shenk.
The second half was scoreless for nearly 20 minutes before senior Heather Aughinbaugh netted an unassisted goal. Less than three minutes later, Boreel added an unassisted tally of her own to give the Deacs the 4-0 victory.
Deacon goalkeepers Katie Ridd and Merrilee Robbins did not have to make a single save, while Nolan finished with 25 stops. The Deacons earned 13 penalty corners, while denying Davidson even a single one.
Wake Forest returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on sixth-ranked Penn State at James Madison University. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
