Final Stats

Winston-Salem, N.C. - On a day that featured a pre-game ceremony honoring Wake Forest??s three seniors, the fourth-ranked field hockey team defeated #12 North Carolina, 2-0 at Kentner Stadium. After 42 starts together, seniors Heather Aughinbaugh, Lynne Shenk, and Maria Whitehead were playing in their last regular season home game. In getting their 12th consecutive win, the Demon Deacons improve to 13-2 (3-0 ACC), while Carolina falls to 8-8 (2-1 ACC). The game will not be counted towards the ACC standings. The win was Wake??s 21st in a row at Kentner Stadium and fifth in a row over North Carolina. It was also the team??s sixth shutout of the season.

The Demon Deacons were on the board first, as sophomore Kelly Dostal took a flip from junior Kelly Doton and batted it from the air into the back of the goal. Defense took over for the remainder of the half and the score at halftime remained 1-0.

Defense and goalkeeping dominated the second half as well, with both Wake Forest junior keeper Katie Ridd and North Carolina senior Amy Tran making several acrobatic saves. Wake Forest was able to break through with less than 10 minutes remaining. Aughinbaugh, playing in her last home game, split the Carolina defense and snuck the ball under Tran??s blocker to seal the 2-0 victory.

Wake Forest outshot North Carolina, 15-14 but the Tar Heels earned 11 penalty corners to just seven for Wake Forest. In getting her fifth solo shutout of the year, Ridd finished with seven saves, while Tran made eight.

"That was a great win for us,?? said Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill. ??It may not have been the prettiest game we??ve ever played, but it was great to see our leaders step up and fight like that.??

The Deacons will wrap up the regular season and their ACC schedule on Sunday, October 27 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
