Charlottesville, Va. - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team wrapped up the regular season and their ACC schedule with a 2-0 shutout of 19th-ranked Virginia today in Charlottesville. In getting their 13th consecutive win, the Deacs finish the season at 14-2. Wake also finishes at 4-0 in ACC play, going undefeated in the conference for the first time in school history. With the 4-0 conference mark, the Deacons clinch the top seed for the 2002 ACC Championship.
True to form, the Deacons attacked early, firing five shots in the opening five minutes but failing to score. Then, in the eighth minute of play, the Deacons drew a penalty corner and freshman Maeke Boreel tipped a shot from sophomore Kelly Dostal into the net to give the Deacs the early 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, senior and reigning ACC Player of the Week Heather Aughinbaugh took the ball into the circle and fired it past Virginia goalkeeper Emily White to put the Deacs on top 2-0. That was all the offense the Deacs would need, as the defense held the Cavaliers to just one shot and one penalty corner in the game.
Wake Forest outshot Virginia by a 25-1 margin and earned six penalty corners to just one for the Cavaliers. Wake Forest junior goalkeeper Katie Ridd did not have to make a save in the game, while White was forced to make 14 stops.
The Deacons will not be back in action until Friday, November 8 at 7:00 pm at the 2002 ACC Championship in Durham, N.C. Because of their undefeated ACC record, the Deacons will receive a first-round bye and will play the winner of the game between the yet-to-be-determined fourth- and fifth-seeded teams.
