Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team (18-2) defeated the Duke Blue Devils (14-9) by a score of 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship today at Wake's Kentner Stadium. The Demon Deacons advance to the NCAA Semifinals for the third consecutive season, where they will take on Michigan State, who defeated Northeastern in penalty strokes today. The other semifinal match will feature the Old Dominion Monarchs and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
The game was back and forth throughout the first half, as Wake Forest failed to convert on two scoring chances. The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
The teams continued the even battle in the second half until the Deacs finally broke through in the 51st minute of play. Freshman Maeke Boreel crossed the ball to sophomore Kelly Dostal who beat Duke keeper Christy Morgan on the far post. The Deacons added another goal just five minutes later when Boreel collected a rebound and found the back of the goal. Despite two late penalty corners, the Blue Devils were unable to get on the board and the Deacons held on for the 2-0 victory.
"We faced another strong performance from Duke," said Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill. "But I'm extremely proud of our team. We played two solid halves and we kept with our game plan."
The Demon Deacons will travel to the University of Louisville for their semifinal matchup with Michigan State. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
