Cross Country Ready for NCAA Championships

The Wake Forest women's cross country squad was one of 31 teams to receive a bid to the national championships in Terre Haute, IN. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Thirty-eight individuals, the first four from each region and two additional qualifiers, were selected to participate in each championship. All individual qualifiers must finish in the top 25 in their region. Mike Altieri received an at-large bid to represent the Demon Deacon men as well.
Indiana State University will host the 2002 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships at the Wabash Family Sports Center, Terre Haute, Indiana. The women's race will begin at noon, followed by the men's race at 1:15 p.m.
NCAA Southeast Regional Championship Recap
Women: The Wake Forest women's cross country team paced its way to a national championship bid on Saturday, winning the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Greenville, NC. The Demon Deacons have not finished lower than second in a meet during the 2002 season.
The Deacs were led by All-ACC selection Anne Bersagel, who notched a third-place finish with a time of 19:51.6. In 11th was Anna Sherman with a time of 20:32.3, followed by All-ACC selection Risa Rutland in 13th (20:36.9). Freshman Erin Franklin, with a time of 20:50.5, finished in 16th place.
Others competing for Wake Forest included Jill Miller in 33rd (21:08.9), Danielle Coon in 34th (21:10.6) and Denise Hefferin in 73rd (22:02.2).
Men: The Wake Forest men's cross country team notched an eighth-place finish on Saturday at the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Greenville, NC. The 10k race included 25 teams vying for a national championship bid.
Mike Altieri paced the Demon Deacons, grabbing seventh place with a time of 30:21.5. Altieri was also named to the NCAA Southeast All-Regional squad. Sean Stevens finished at the 40th spot with a time of 31:24.2, followed by Brandon Bartholomew in 45th (31:31.5). Also competing for the Deacs were Eddie Acosta (58th), Andrew Ice (83rd) and Matt Busick (85th).
