Women's Basketball Drowns Seahawks, 65-59

The Wake Forest women's basketball team handed UNC Wilmington its first loss of the season in a thrilling down-to-the-wire meeting, 65-59, on Sunday afternoon in Wilmington, NC. With the victory, the Demon Deacons improve to 9-1 on the season and extend their winning streak to eight games. The Seahawks fall to 7-1 overall.
Wake Forest led by as many as five points during the first half, with Cotelia Bond-Young draining three 3-point baskets, but UNCW's Shameka Montgomery completed a three-point play to close the lead within one at the end of the period. The halftime score was 30-29, Wake Forest.
The Deacs came out strong in the second half, building the lead, 43-40. However, an almost four minute scoring drought allowed the Seahawks to gain an advantage and take the lead, 48-43. Tiffani Listenbee ended the dry spell at the 9:38 mark with a lay-up and Erin Ferrell eventually evened the score at 48. A three-pointer from Bianca Brown gave the Demon Deacons a 51-48 lead. UNCW came within two with 12 seconds left, but Eafton Hill hit four consecutive free throws to seal the win.
Hill led Wake Forest with 17 points, while Bond-Young chipped in 15, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Erin Ferrell came off the bench to add 12 points, scoring 10 in the second half, while Tracy Alston grabbed 10 rebounds. Shameka Montgomery headed up the UNCW scoring efforts with 21 points, while Jennifer Kapper had 15.
The Demon Deacons remained undefeated in December and are headed into league action posting their best record since the 1992-93 season. Wake Forest will return home to take on Florida State in its first ACC meeting on Jan. 2 at 7:00 pm at Joel Coliseum.
