Davidson, N.C. - The 15th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team opened its 2002 season in grand fashion with a 7-2 win at Davidson on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore Kyle Sleeth (1-0) earned the win and struck out a career-high 10 batters. He allowed just one run on six hits through seven innings without issuing a walk. Davidson batters didn't hit the ball out of the infield until there were two outs in the fourth inning.
The Deacons blew it open in the fifth inning after a Davidson error with two outs kept Wake Forest's inning alive. Jamie D'Antona, who led the team with 17 home runs last year, cleared the bases with a grand slam to give the Deacons a 6-1 advantage.
Wake Forest got on the board first in the third inning. Nick Blue's two-run, two-out double off the top of the wall in right field scored Brad Scioletti and Adam Bourassa.
Bourassa made an impressive debut, reaching base in all four plate appearances. The junior college transfer from Kishwaukee (Ill.) CC had two singles and walked twice.
Only two members of the starting lineup -- Blue and D'Antona -- were the lineup on opening day in 2001. Head coach George Greer, who coached six years at Davidson, improved his record to 31-3 against his old team.
The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. Wake Forest plays Rice at 4:30 (central time) at Reckling Park.
