The 15th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team got back on track with a 3-2 victory over New Mexico on Saturday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.
Ryan Hubbard's one-out single in the top of the ninth inning scored Ryder Mathias to give the Deacons a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Adam Hanson earned the win (1-0), pitching the final three innings, allowing no runs on just one hit.
In the ninth inning, Mathias led off with a walk. Adam Bourassa laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mathias to second base.
The Deacons (2-1) trailed by two runs in the fourth inning but sliced the lead in half on Jamie D'Antona's RBI single. Wake Forest continued to chip away and finally broke through in the sixth inning. Mathias poked a two-out infield single tied the game at two.
Freshman Tim Morley made his career debut was effective through six innings of work. He did not factor in the decision but allowed just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Mathias, a redshirt freshman making his career debut, was one of the offensive stars for Wake Forest with two hits and a walk in addition to scoring the game-winning run.
Wake Forest finishes the weekend tomorrow afternoon with a noon showdown with eighth-ranked Nebraska. The Deacons will send their ace, Kyle Sleeth, to the hill against the Cornhuskers here at Reckling Park.
