The 12th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team finished a weekend sweep of visiting Cincinnati with a 9-5 win on Sunday at Hooks Stadium. The Demon Deacons used a five-run seventh inning to rally from a 5-4 deficit.
Four Deacons had two hits, including sophomore Steve LeFaivre who drove in three. LeFaivre, a Winston-Salem native and West Forsyth graduate, went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and drove in the game-winning runs with a double in the seventh inning.
Wake Forest scored four runs in the third inning as Ryan Hubbard's leadoff double was followed by four straight hits that plated three runs. A run-scoring groundout by Jeff Ruziecki made the score 4-0.
Cincinnati wasted no time in getting back in the game of with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth off Wake Forest starter Brad Comer. Comer pitched five innings and allowed just those three runs and struck out two.
The Bearcats took the lead in the sixth on Aaron Moll's two-run homer. But Wake Forest, which had already posted three comeback victories in as many days, once again rallied.
With one on and one out, the Deacons exploded with consecutive doubles by LeFaivre, Stephen Ghutzman and Ruziecki to put them up 8-5. Adam Bourassa tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-5.
Freshman Daniel Davidson (1-0) pitched 1.1 innings of one-hit relief for his first collegiate win and Adam Hanson pitched the final 1.2 innings for his first career save.
Wake Forest improved its record to 7-1 while the Bearcats slid to 4-5. The Demon Deacons have won 41 of their last 43 non-conference home games dating to 1999. They will return to action on Tuesday at High Point before returning to host Albany and Appalachian State later in the week.
