Women's Tennis Pummels Volunteers In Consolations Quarterfinals

MADISON, WI - The 14th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis defeated No. 6 Tennessee 6-1 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Demon Deacons took two of three doubles matches to earn the first point and then won five of six singles matches to finish off the Volunteers improving their record to 4-1 on the season.
Third-ranked doubles team Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman steamrolled over Tennessee's 45th-ranked tandem of Vilmarie Castellvi and Agnes Wiski in the No. 1 doubles match 8-5. Maren Haus and Aimee Smith fell to the Volunteers' 12th-ranked team of Alison Ojeda and Crystal Cleveland 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match, but Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz teamed up for Wake Forest to defeat Kim Gates and Bruke Cordell 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Haus made quick work of Gates in the No. 3 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-0 and Schwartz didn't take much longer with Tennessee's Cordell, winning 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles match. Bielik, Bergman and Smith went three sets with their Volunteer opponents in singles play, but were victorious.
