Men's Tennis Clobbers Maryland, 7-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated Maryland 7-0 Sunday afternoon. The 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons won two of three doubles matches to capture the first point and then swept all six singles matches, winning in straight sets at each position.
Derrick Spice tied the single-season school record for singles victories with his 30th win, when he defeated Maryland's Troy Demers 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 match. Justin Kaufmann, who beat Maryland's David Reichsfeld 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match, moves into second place on Wake Forest's career singles victories list with 87 career wins. He only trails the career record holder, Stephan Dallwitz (1985-88), by only two victories.
David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon won their No. 1 doubles match 8-4. Loewenthal won 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match and Brendon took the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Mike Murray and Spice won the No. 2 doubles match 8-3 and Murray also won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 7-6.
Wake Forest improves to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC with the win and Maryland falls to 6-6 and 0-5 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action next week when they return home to host No. 55 Brown at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 and No. 14 Duke at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27 at Leighton Stadium.
