Women's Tennis Handles Florida State, 6-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team remained perfect in ACC play (3-0), handing 48th-ranked Florida State a 6-1 defeat at Leighton Tennis Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Demon Deacons improve to 15-2, while Florida State drops to 9-10, 1-3 in conference play.
The teams opened the match with singles play, and Wake Forest quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead, picking up wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 singles. At No. 1, top-ranked Bea Bielik defeated FSU's 36th-ranked Anca Dumitrescu, 6-2, 6-1. Wake Forest's 17th-ranked Janet Bergman also defeated a ranked opponent, topping Seminole Alida Gallovits, 6-4, 6-1. Wake's third singles victory came at No. 5, where freshman Karin Coetzee defeated Lauren Walker, 6-2, 6-4.
Wake Forest senior Maren Haus clinched the team victory at No. 3 singles, holding off Jessica Balbuena 6-4, 7-5. Haus was down 5-4 in the second set before winning the final three games for the victory.
At No. 4 singles, Wake freshman Katie Martzolf, ranked 81st nationally, defeated Florida State's Christine Denny. Martzolf won the first set 6-2, then fell behind 5-1 in the second as Denny went on to win that set, 6-4. Martzolf then came back to take the third set, 6-3, for the victory.
Florida State picked up its lone victory of the day at No. 6 singles, where Meredith Fish topped Wake's Liz Proctor, 6-2, 4-6 (10-8).
Wake Forest also swept the three doubles matches, as the top-ranked duo of Bergman and Bielik defeated FSU's Balbuena and Walker, 8-4, at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Wake's Coetzee and Aimee Smith teamed up to post an 8-2 win over Denny and Gallovits. Wake's No. 3 duo of Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz held off Dumitrescu and Beth Lawrence, 8-6.
Wake Forest returns to action next Saturday when it hosts 22nd-ranked Notre Dame beginning at 11:00 am at Leighton Tennis Stadium.
