Winston-Salem, N.C. - The 8th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team captured its 20th victory of the season with a 14-8 win over visiting Liberty on Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
Wake Forest scored seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back as Seth Hill put out the fire with five innings of relief, allowing just one run with three strikeouts. Hill retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced. He picked his first Wake Forest win, improving to 1-0 on the season.
Offensively for the Deacons, third baseman Jamie D'Antona had three hits and three RBI. Shortstop Ben Ingold had three hits. Right fielder Ryan Braun scored three runs and blasted home run in the third inning, his third of the season.
Junior lefty Ben Clayton made his first start since Feb. 26 and threw two innings on a pitch count. He allowed three runs on two hits with one strikeout.
The Deacons saw eight different Liberty pitchers but starter David Bechtold suffered the loss, dropping to 1-2 overall.
Wake Forest improved to 20-4 overall and became the fastest team to reach the 20-win plateau, needing just 24 games. Liberty slipped to 13-9-1. The Deacons will host Florida State this weekend at Hooks Stadium. Friday's game begins at 1:30 p.m.
