New Orleans, La. -- Behind a combined shutout from Kyle Sleeth and Dave Bush, the 10th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team defeated the University of New Orleans, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.
Sleeth was dominant, throwing eight innings and earning the win. He improved his record to 4-0, striking out seven with no walks and allowing the Privateers to just three hits. After Sleeth hit the leadoff man in the ninth inning, he turned the ball over to Bush who earned his third save of the season but not before things got interesting. The Privateers had runners on second and third with nobody out before Bush closed the door.
It was the first time Wake Forest shut out an opponent since April 26, 2000 when the Deacs blanked Maryland at Hooks Stadium.
Sleeth carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He retired the first 13 batters, including all 12 he faced before a one hour and 47 minute rain delay. But the second batter following the break, Trevizo, reached on an infield single, the first Privateer to reach base.
The Deacons got things going with a run in the first inning. Ryan Hubbard led off the game with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. One batter later, Jamie D'Antona singled back through the middle to score Hubbard.
Wake Forest added to its lead in the fifth inning when Adam Bourassa tripled to score Ben Ingold. After Jamie D'Antona was intentionally walked, Stephen Ghutzman stepped in with runners on the corners and two out. Then, play was halted for a rain delay that lasted an hour and 47 minutes. After the game resumed, Ghutzman struck out to end the threat.
Sleeth got some outstanding defensive help from his infielders, specifically Ben Ingold and Jamie D'Antona. Twice, UNO third baseman J.D. Huether was robbed of hits by spectacular plays with the glove.
The Deacons will continue their weekend series with the Privateers on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Maestri Field.
