WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Two come-from-behind victories in doubles helped spark the Wake Forest women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Leighton Tennis Stadium. The win lifts the fourth-ranked Demon Deacons to a 19-4 record, 5-2 in the ACC. Maryland falls to 9-10 overall, 1-6 in the league.
The Deacons played the match without the services of Bea Bielik, who sprained her ankle versus Duke on Thursday. The junior, who is ranked No. 1 nationally in both singles and doubles, was expected to miss today's match, as well as tomorrow's versus Virginia.
Wake Forest used a strong comeback at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take the first point of the match. Wake picked up the first doubles win at No. 3, where freshmen Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz defeated Maryland's Chloe Chavardes and Pam Floro, 8-5. At No. 2, the Deacon duo of Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith were down 5-1 to Emily DeCamilla and Marta Jedrzejak before taking seven of the next eight games to win, 8-6, and clinch the doubles point for Wake. At No. 1 doubles, seniors Janet Bergman and Maren Haus played together for the first time this season versus 51st-ranked Delila Causevic and Emily Marker of Maryland. The Wake team also found themselves down 5-1, but came back to force a tiebreaker, winning 9-8(3) for the Wake Forest doubles sweep.
Bergman, ranked 16th nationally, moved up to No. 1 in the singles lineup and had little trouble with 53rd-ranked Causevic, winning 6-2, 6-3. Schwartz gave the Deacons a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over DeCamilla. Martzolf, ranked 108th nationally, then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 performance over Jedrzejak at No. 4.
Maryland picked up its lone victory of the day at No. 3 singles, where 99th-ranked Marker defeated Coetzee, 3-6, 6-4 (10-4). The closest match of the day took place at No. 2 singles where Haus rallied to defeat Floro 6-7, 7-5 (10-8). Wake sophomore Liz Proctor then iced the Deacons' victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Chavardes.
"With today's match against Maryland, we took that attitude that we were supposed to win, and we did," said WFU head coach Brian Fleishman. "Tomorrow against Virginia we've got to have that same attitude."
Wake Forest will play its final regular season match on Sunday versus 70th-ranked Virginia at 12 noon at Leighton Stadium. Wake's two seniors, Bergman and Haus, will be honored prior to the match. The match is the first of a Deacon doubleheader, as the Wake men's team hosts NC State at 3:00 p.m. or immediately following the women's match.
