CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team won The 2002 Intercollegiate title and Deacon Bill Haas earned individual medalist honors, both by one stroke, on Sunday afternoon at UNC's Finley Golf Course. The victories marked the second team title for the Demon Deacons this spring, as well as the second career individual victory for Haas, a sophomore from Greer, S.C.
Twelve teams participated in The Intercollegiate, a 54-hole event which took place on the par 72, 7,057-yard layout at Finley.
Wake Forest defeated NC State by one stroke, finishing the tournament with a 23-under par 841. The Deacs overcame North Carolina's one-stroke lead entering the final round by shooting a six-under 282 on Sunday. The Tar Heels turned in a 291 on Sunday to drop to third, while NC State, which entered the day in fourth place, used a 281 to move into second.
WFU turned in three straight rounds under par for the second straight event, scoring a 274-285-282 at The Intercollegiate. The Deacs placed second by five strokes last week at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invite, finishing at 18-under par.
Tied for first entering Sunday's round, Haas carded a three-under 69 to win the individual title. Haas shot three straight rounds in the 60s, finishing with a career-best 203. He held off UNC's Ramon Bescansa, who turned in a 68 on Sunday but finished one stroke back with a 12-under 204. Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker, who began the day tied with Haas for first, finished third after a final round 71.
Wake senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) posted his second top-10 finish of the season, placing 10th with a four-under 212 (68-72-72). Junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) made the biggest move in the Deacon lineup, firing a 68 on Sunday and vaulting from 34th to 12th in the final standings with a three-under 213 (74-71-68).
Junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) finished 27th with a one-over 217 after turning in a 77 in the final round. Senior Bart DeLuca (Baltimore, Md.), playing in his first tournament of the season, moved up four spots in the standings to finish 61st with a 12-over 228 (74-81-73).
