WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 14th annual ACC Women's Golf Championship will be held this weekend at Salem Glen golf course in Clemmons, N.C. with rounds beginning at 8:30 a.m. each morning. The championship will be played on a 72-par course boasting 6,411 yards. Six ACC schools will complete the field including: No. 2 Duke, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 26 North Carolina, No. 39 Florida State, No. 47 NC State and No. 94 Maryland according to the March 16th Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate Rankings.
The 18th-ranked Demon Deacons are looking to capture the title after turning in second place finishes the last two years. Duke has earned first place honors six consecutive years. Duke boasts the most league titles with nine, followed by Wake Forest with three and North Carolina with one.
Wake Forest finished second in last year's ACC Tournament in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The Deacs shot three-over Duke to finish as the runner-up despite the fact that four Deacons finished in the top 10: Katie Brenny (2), Marta Prieto (3), Nuria Clau (6) and Deb Means (10).
The Deacs recorded their best finish of the spring at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. two weeks ago. Wake finished in sixth place, led by freshman Ashley Hoagland who finished a career-high tied for sixth place. Wake Forest has compiled eight top 10 finishes from the fall and spring season.
Wake boasts three players ranked by Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate Rankings in the top 100. Junior Nuria Clau is ranked 23rd presently but has been ranked as high as eighth (March 1). Clau has accumulated three top five and two top 20 finishes this season. Sophomore Deb Means is ranked 80th after putting together four top 20 finishes, including a tied for 15th place finish at the Bryan National Collegiate. Freshman Ashley Hoagland broke into the rankings two weeks ago at 88th and has moved into 83rd place currently. She posted her career best showing at the Bryan as well.
Results from the ACC Championship will be posted on wakeforestsports.com and theacc.com.
