Greensboro, N.C. -- The seventh-ranked Wake Forest baseball team defeated UNC Greensboro 6-3 on Tuesday night in the Gate City. The Deacons have won six of their last seven and improved to 23-5 on the season.
Seth Hill was effective in four innings of relief, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Dave Bush closed the door in the ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.
With the Deacons already leading 5-3, Jamie D'Antona added an eighth inning insurance run with a moon shot over the 20-foot wall in dead center field. D'Antona finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Stephen Ghutzman had a pair of doubles and two RBI.
The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead with one in the second and two in the third off freshman Tim Morley.
UNCG starter Chris Cloninger faced the minimum the first time through the Deacon order but Wake Forest rallied to take the lead in the fourth. The Spartan outfielders had difficulty handling routine fly balls and the Deacons benefited, plating four runs. Wake Forest took the lead on Jeff Ruziecki's sacrifice fly.
Tuesday's win marked the seventh consecutive win over the Spartans. The Deacons lead the all-time series, 21-6.
Seventh-ranked Wake Forest will host ACC-leading North Carolina for a weekend series beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Hooks Stadium. Kyle Sleeth will make the start for the Deacons.
