Women's Golf Eighth Seed In NCAA East Regional Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 20th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team was named the eighth seed out of 21 qualifiers in the 2002 NCAA East Regional Championships hosted by Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. May 9-11. The field will play at The University Club that boasts approximately 5,900 yards and is a par 72 course.
The Deacs opposition will include top-ranked Auburn, No. 2 Duke, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 9 Georgia, No. 11 Vanderbilt, No. 12 Florida, No. 21 South Carolina, No. 27 Furman, No. 28 Louisiana State, No. 31 North Carolina, No. 32 Tulane, No. 36 Mississippi State, No. 37 Memphis, No. 40 Central Florida, No. 42 South Florida, No. 43 Alabama, No. 45 NC State, No. 47 Texas A&M, Yale and Jackson State.
A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. The top eight teams and two individuals from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships held in Auburn, Wash. May 21-24. Georgia was the 2001 national champion and Candy Hannemann of Duke earned medalist honors. The Central Regional will be held in East Lansing, Mich. and West Regional in Stanford, Calif.
The Deacons have compiled nine top 10 finishes for the 2001-02 season, ending on a high note of second place at the ACC Championships in Clemmons, N.C. Wake Forest has competed against 17 teams this year that are ranked in the top 25 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate Rankings as of April 28.
Last year Wake Forest missed the cut by one stroke to finish in ninth place shooting a 909 team score in Chapel Hill, N.C. Wake earned a seventh place finish in 2000 to advance to the championships finals, but missed in 1999 and 1998 with a pair of ninth place finishes.
