Winston-Salem, N.C. -- The Baseball America weekly poll was released on Monday and for the first time in school history, Wake Forest is ranked in top five. The Demon Deacons check in at number five, behind perennial powers Clemson, Stanford, Rice and Alabama.
Wake Forest, ranked seventh last week by the publication, improved its stock with two wins over 21st-ranked North Carolina over the weekend and a mid-week victory at UNC Greensboro.
The Demon Deacons have won three of the last four ACC titles and earned NCAA Tournament bids each of the last four seasons. But at 25-6 overall in 2002 and 8-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Wake Forest is off to the best start in school history.
Wake Forest is one of three ACC teams in the top six and one of five teams in the top 25.
Wake Forest has been ranked in the Top 25 for 20 consecutive weeks, dating back to last April.
Note: Although the Deacons won a national championship in 1955 and advanced to the College World Series in 1949, there were no national polls at that time.
