#40 Clemson Outlasts #16 William & Mary, 4-3
The 40th-ranked Clemson women??s tennis team held on for a first-round NCAA victory, defeating the College of William & Mary, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The 16th-ranked Tribe is the highest ranked opponent the Tigers have defeated this season.
With the win, Clemson??s record improves to 14-10, while William & Mary??s season concludes with a 19-8 overall mark. The Tigers advance to the second round to face American or host Wake Forest, who were competing in Saturday??s second match. Several rain showers in the morning delayed, then moved both matches from the ??Upper Eight?? courts on campus to the Indoor Center.
The Tigers put the first point on the board by winning the doubles point. In a battle of two nationally-ranked doubles teams at No. 1, William & Mary??s tandem of Jessyca Arthur and Candice Fuchs, ranked 16th, defeated Clemson??s 39th-ranked Laurence Jayet and Alix Lacelarie, 8-3. The Tigers responded with a win at No. 3 doubles, as Milena Stanoytcheva and Richele LeSaldo won 8-4 over Angela Burgess and Lena Sherbakov. Clemson then captured the doubles point as the No. 2 team of Anna Savitskaya and Ania Dolinska topped the Tribe??s Amy Wei and Kari Olsen, 8-5. The Tiger tandem was down 5-2 in that match before taking the next six points for the victory.
William & Mary regained some momentum in singles, picking up the first two wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to go up 2-1 in the match. At No. 2, Fuchs, a freshman ranked 101st nationally, defeated Savitskaya, 6-2, 6-3. The Tribe??s Buergis held off Clemson??s Ana Stiglic, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3.
Clemson evened the match at 2-2 when Jayet picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sherbakov at No. 4. The teams found themselves knotted again at 3-3 after splitting the Nos. 5 and 6 matches. At No. 5, William & Mary??s Wei came from behind in the second set to defeat Ioana Paun, 6-3, 6-4, while Clemson??s Stanoytcheva topped Nina Kamp, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6.
The match then came down to No. 1 singles, featuring Clemson??s 32nd-ranked Lacelarie and the Tribe??s 56th-ranked Arthur. Lacelarie jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 6-3. Arthur came back to win a tiebreaker in the second, 7-6, and force a third set. The two battled back and forth in the third, with Arthur taking the biggest lead at 5-3. Lacelarie came back, however, winning the next four games to take the set 7-5 and clinch the team victory for the Tigers.
