Women's Golf Makes Seventh NCAA Championship Appearance

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 20th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team advances to the NCAA Championships for the seventh time in Wake Forest history, after turning out a third place finish at the NCAA East Regionals in Baton Rouge. The championships are hosted by the University of Washington in Auburn May 21-24. They will be held at the Washington National Golf Club that boasts 6,273 yards and a par 72 course.
The field of 24 includes Duke and Wake from the ACC. Participating teams from the East include: Duke, Auburn, Wake Forest, Florida, South Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Vanderbilt. Including individuals Meredith Duncan, LSU and Meaghan Francella, Memphis.
From the Central Region Tulsa, Texas, Ohio State, Purdue, Oklahoma State, Michigan, Oklahoma and Michigan. Plus Martina Gillen of Kent State and Melanie Hagewood of Baylor will compete individually.
Then from the West Region UCLA, Pepperdine, California, Arizona, Stanford, Arizona State, Washington, Southern California, Alena Sharp of New Mexico State and Kristi Larson of New Mexico.
Georgia is the defending 2001 national champion.
The last trip to the championships for Wake Forest was in 2000 when the Deacs finished 17th out of 24 teams in Sunriver, OR.
The format is four days of 18-holes with two practice rounds on Sunday and Monday. The Deacs will tee off at 12:20 p.m. from the 10th tee in the first round on Tuesday, May 21st. Results will be posted on wakeforestsports.com and gohuskies.com as well as live scoring kept at golfstat.com.
