Men's Golf Remains in Sixth at NCAA East Regional

ROSWELL, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team remained in sixth place after the second round of the NCAA East Regional. The Deacs turned in an eight-over 296 on Friday and are 19-over for the tournament with a 595.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament, featuring 27 teams, is taking place on the par 72, 7,054-yard layout at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek.
The top 10 teams, as well as the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams from the East Regional will advance to the 2002 NCAA Championships at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course May 29-June 1.
Clemson remains in first place with a one-over 577 after two rounds. Host Georgia Tech is just one stroke behind the Tigers, while North Carolina turned in a field low two-under on Friday to move into third place with a 581. Florida is in fourth at 590, while Virginia Commonwealth was the surprise team of the day, improving by 20 strokes from the first round to tie UNC's -2 and jump from 20th to fifth place in the standings.
Wake Forest, in sixth place, is just two strokes ahead of two teams tied for ninth - the cutoff point if the tournament were ending after this round.
Deacon sophomore Bill Haas overcome a rough start - bogeys on his first two holes - and recorded a birdie on 18 to finish a team-best one-under par. He is currently tied for 10th with a one-over 145.
Junior Brent Wanner also improved in the standings, going from 21st to 17th after carding a two-over 74 on Friday. He currently owns a three-over 147 through two rounds. Chris Yoder birdied holes No. 16 and 18 to finish with a three-over 75 on Friday, and is 45th in the standings with a five-over 149.
Junior Chad Wilfong improved by two strokes on Friday, carding a 76 to bring his total to a 10-over 154. He is currently 72nd. Jay Morgan struggled on Friday's round, turning in a 79. He is 99th overall with a two-day total of 157.
The final round of the NCAA East Regional takes place Saturday. The Demon Deacons will tee off from hole No. 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m., paired with Florida and VCU.
