Wake Forest Baseball Falls To Duke, 6-2

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke sophomore pitcher Zach Schreiber pitched the first complete game of his career and led the Blue Devils to a 6-2 upset victory over the third-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Jack Coombs Field Saturday evening.
In his fourth start of the season, Schreiber allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits and four walks. After giving up two runs in the third inning, Schreiber settled down and took command of the game.
"We played excellent defense and that gave me a lot of confidence," Schreiber said. "I wasn't trying to overthrow. I was just trying to keep the ball down in the zone and throw strikes. It was good to get a win. We're excited."
"Zach Schreiber did a great job," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said. "He stepped up and put us in a situationto win the game. Wake Forest is a great program and that's a big win for us. Through all the adversity we've faced the last few weeks, we've continued to battle. I'm glad the final day of the conference everyone will be looking at everyone else's scores."
Wake Forest, North Carolina, Clemson and Florida State are all battling for the top seed in next week's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Three consecutive Demon Deacon batters reached base with one out in the inning. Ryder Mathias was hit by a pitch, Adam Bourassa singled and Ryan Johnson walked. Mathias scored on a sacrifice fly by Jamie D'Antona and Stephen Ghutzman had an RBI-single that plated Bourassa.
Duke tied up the game with two runs in the fourth. Junior right fielder Brian Patrick extended his hitting streak to six games with a single to right field and senior shortstop Kevin Kelly extended his hitting streak to eight games with his ninth home run of the season and his second in two games, a two-run shot over the left field wall.
The B lue Devils took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Sophomore left fielder Drew Jerdan hit a one-out double to right-center and scored on a single to right by Patrick, who extended his streak of games with multiple hits to six games.
Duke added three runs in the seventh inning. Freshman catcher Blake Walker drew a one-out walk. Freshman Senterrio Landrum entered as a pinch-runner, stole second and scored on a ground-rule double to left field by junior centerfielder Doug Bechtold. After Patrick drew a walk, Kelly plated Bechtold with a double to left field. Patrick scored his second run of the game on a groundout by junior first baseman Larry Broadway.
Patrick (2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Kelly (2-4, 2B, HR, 1 R, 3 RBI) led the Blue Devils offensively. Bourassa led the Demon Deacons with three hits.
Schreiber improved to 2-3 with the win. Seth Hill (3-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in 6.0 innings.
Duke (23-31, 4-19 ACC) and Wake Forest (41-9-1, 16-6 ACC) conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field.
