NCAA Singles Championships Postponed by Rain

STANFORD, Calif. - The opening day of the 2002 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship was halted by rain on Monday at the Taube Tennis Center after only 42 minutes of competition.
Nine of the 32 first round singles matches began at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, but were halted by rain at 10:42 a.m. The competition was halted for the day at 1:56 p.m. after a 3-hour, 14-minute rain delay. Wake Forest women??s tennis players Bea Bielik, the No. 1 seed, and Janet Bergman had not yet started their first-round matches when the rains came.
The nine singles matches that were suspended will begin on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. The entire first and second rounds are scheduled to be completed on Tuesday. Bielik will face Harvard??s Susanna Lingman and Bergman is scheduled to play Kavitha Krishnamurthy of Princeton in first-round action.
The NCAA Doubles Championship, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, will now start on Wednesday. The Deacon duo, seeded second in the 32-team bracket, will face Katie Cunha and Linsey Green of Notre Dame in a 3:00 p.m. match.
