Wake Forest vs. NC State May 22, 2002 ACC Tournament - First Round Post-game Notes
With the win, Wake Forest...
- - Improves to 43-9-1 overall.
- - Has defeated NC State in seven of the last eight meetings and in 12 of the last 16 meetings.
- - Ties the 1998 team for the third-most wins in school history (4).
- - George Greer gets his 558th win at Wake Forest, his 24th ACC Tournament victory, tied for sixth-most in conference history.
- - Wins in the first round of the ACC Tournament for the fifth straight season.
- - Gives Wake at least 43 wins in four of the last five seasons.
- - Makes Wake four wins shy of tying the school single-season record for wins.
- - Improves to 10-0 all-time as the ACC Tournament's No. 2 seed.
- - Improves to 19-3-1 in its last 23 games.
Kyle Sleeth got his 13th victory of the season to improve to 13-0 overall. He ties John Hendricks and Mike MacDougal for the single season record for victories by a pitcher. Sleeth is now 23-3 in his two-year career, which ties him for fifth on Wake's all-time career victories list and gives him the highest winning percentage in school history.
Nick Blue (separated shoulder) returned to the lineup for the first time since Sunday May 12. He batted second and was the designated hitter.
Ryan Hubbard (sore back) returned to the lineup for the first time since Friday May 17. He singled, doubled and stole his 16th base of the season in the third inning before leaving the game after the fourth inning.
Ryan Johnson extended his season-best hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the first inning. With five RBI today, Johnson has driven in 21 runs in the team's last nine games.
Jamie D'Antona's three-run home run in the fourth was his 17th of the year, equaling his total from last season. He has three ACC tournament home runs in six games.
In its last two ACC Tournament games - both coming against NC State - the Deacons have scored 29 runs and pounded out 34 hits.
Wake scored its most runs in an ACC Tournament first-round game since a 16-2 win over Virginia in 1978.
Over the last nine games, the Deacons have averaged 10.1 runs and 13.1 base hits per contest.
Vs. UNC - Wake has won 10 out of the last 11 meetings and 14 out of the last 18 meetings. UNC beat the Deacons in the 1997 ACC Tournament, but Wake has won three straight versus the Tar Heels in ACC Tournament play including one in each of the last two tournaments.
Vs. Virginia - Wake has won the last seven meetings and 16 out of the last 18 meetings. In ACC Tournament play, the Cavaliers and Deacons have met in each of the previous three tournaments with Wake winning twice.
