
Wiles Named Academic All-American

Philip Wiles, a senior distance runner on the Wake Forest men's cross country and track & field teams was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Third Team on Tuesday. The Huntsville, AL native graduated May 20 with a degree in Biology and a sparkling 3.892 grade point average.
Wiles, a Dean's List student at Wake Forest and a member of the ACC Honor Roll, finished 14th in the 10,000m at the 2002 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 32:28.17. This past fall in cross country, Wiles was the eighth place finisher at Appalachian State's Mountaineer Open. He finished in the top 25 at the 2001 ACC Cross Country Championships to help the Demon Deacons place second. Wiles posted a 46th place finish at the NCAA Regionals to help Wake Forest finish third and qualify for the NCAA Championships. At the NCAA Championships, he ran a time of 31:20 on the 10k course, helping Wake Forest place 19th.
To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America team, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career.
