A trio of Deacons led Chatham of the Cape Cod League to a 12-2 win on Friday night. Jamie D'Antona went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Teammate Ryan Johnson was 2-for-6 with a double and a home run. Steve LeFaivre joined the hit parade, going 1-for-3. For Brewster, Wake Forest's Brad Scioletti hit his first home run of the summer. The four Deacons involved in the game went a combined 8-for-17 with four home runs.
Chatham's lineup has had a Big Four feel lately when as many as eight position players have come from Wake Forest (D'Antona, Johnson, LeFaivre), North Carolina (Chris Iannetta, Jeremy Cleveland), NC State (Chad Orvella, Colt Morton) and Duke (Tim Layden).
D'Antona is one of several Deacons, including Adam Bourassa and Adam Hanson, that are strong candidates for All-Star honors.
D'Antona is tied for the league lead in home runs (4) and among the leaders in extra base hits (2nd), runs batted in (3rd), slugging percentage (3rd) and runs (3rd). After suffering a minor ankle injury last week, Bourassa has found a groove at the plate. Through Friday's action, he is fourth in the league in batting average at a .333 clip. He has six stolen bases, tying for sixth. Hanson has been stellar with a 1-0 record, 0.77 ERA and five saves. In 11.2 innings, Hanson has struck out 16 with just three walks.
Rising sophomore Tim Morley continues to pitch well for Yarmouth-Dennis but is still looking to get into the win column. Morley (0-3) has made three appearances this summer with a respectable 2.93 ERA, allowing just nine hits in 15.1 innings with 11 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Kyle Sleeth continues to impress with Team USA. Sleeth started and got the win in game one of Team USA's national tour last Monday night in Tucson, Ariz. He pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with nine strikeouts. Sleeth is scheduled to pitch against Japan's National Team on Sunday night on Long Island, N.Y., and again on July 6 in Lowell, Mass.
In the New England Collegiate Baseball League, shortstop Ben Ingold is gaining a reputation as one of the league best basestealers. He has seven thefts, fourth-best in the league. Ingold swiped just one base in one attempt for the Deacons as a freshman. Wake Forest teammate Daniel Davidson has been impressive for the Manchester Silkworms with a 1-1 record, 2.89 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.
